With the recent release of Google Talk, it’s no surprise that Skype has fired back with some “Home Grown” technology of its own. Yesterday, in a Skype PR there is mention of 2 new technologies about to be unveiled by Skype, I will go over both of them in this article.
SkypeWeb – this seems to be some sort of social networking feature; this new client will broadcast your availability to a server and relay data back and forth and create contact lists based on your circle of friends to ATOM feeds. I like the idea of having a social networking feature in Skype, but I would want the ability to designate which users are visible in my network circle.
What would be really cool is to have network groups, that way you can belong to your families network and your friends network, but without seeing each others contacts. You wouldn’t want your mom seeing all your girlfriends’ numbers, who knows what she might do!
SkypeNet – a stripped down Skype client enabling developers to create custom web services and servers, SkypeNet is made up of SkypeLite, a client without a user interface which allows developers to integrate into applications such as online games or chat clients. So in short, this opens the doors for developers to place VOIP technology inside of an application, at the same time creating business opportunities for Skype.
SkypeNet and SkypeWeb APIs
“Skype is now extending its investment to the rest of the Web, by opening up of the SkypeNet and SkypeWeb Application Programming Interface (API) as part of the Skype Developer Program, which already supports a thriving community of partners and developers working with Skype to help build the next generation of services taking advantage of Skype’s revolutionary software For more information about Skype’s expanding developer network and how to work with Skype.”
