The Power of the Word: Part II

‘I like being a pirate’: the basic instinct of filesharing. Maybe it’s about time that more people in the filesharing community give some more thought to the matter so we can move forward to (that’s right) the stone age. Many people argue that the great god Technology will save us. Maybe he can, but I think we should build a bigger case. I’ve listed some arguments.

1. No alternative. Show me another means by which I can get to know whatever music and movies so easily. Even if I want to pay for it, I can’t. (Shut up about these ghost alternatives)

2. Freedom of speech. Programs like Freenet will allow people to distribute news without censorship.

3. Obsolete copyright laws. The copyright law can no longer be enforced. What about a patent-like system were movies and music are only copyrighted for a period of 5 years and books for a period of 10 years. Is it normal that some guy can still make money out of ‘The origin of species’ or ‘The Best of The Doors’.
