With the fall of Suprnova and the rise of Exeem, there were several bothersome events. While p2p development still lives on the fringes of legitimacy, it has to be extra careful in managing its growth.
Exeem and Lokitorrent are getting a few lessons in business, especially with regard to marketing.
The first thing that struck me with the announcement and subsequent launch of Exeem was their strategy in how they marketed their application: – with almost blatant disregard for user intelligence.
The ‘build it and they’ll come’ strategy backfired tremendously as p2p forums were first flooded with apprehension, and then with positive criticism.
That turned quickly negative with the introduction of Spyware Cydoor and other third party apps, and the somewhat deceptive measures taken to appease the masses.
Lokitorrent also made that mistake with an ad to sell the site. It demonstrated once again what the “industry” is now also facing: the emancipated consumer.
Results?
1) Hype alone won’t cut it.
2) The user is always right
3) Respect user privacy
4) Be careful when using (legal) notices and statements on sites and in software
