According to reports released Monday, two Web hosting companies based in Dallas, Texas were caught up in the Motion Picture Association of America’s crackdown on Web site and server operators involved in the illegal online distribution of movies and television content.
Hosting providers The Planet Internet Services and Layered Technologies were host to sites and servers allegedly involved in the distribution of copyrighted content using the BitTorrent file distributing software.
Neither The Planet or Layered, however, were named as defendants in civil cases brought against the operators of two Web sites in federal district court in Dallas. And neither case is said to indicate any wrongdoing by either hosting firm.
The Planet was reportedly involved in hosting the TorrentBox site, while Layered was host to the Loki Torrent site, both of which reportedly contained “torrent” links to enable the downloading of copyrighted materials.
According to representatives from The Planet, the company disabled TorrentBox’s “tracker” server on December 15, one day after receiving a complaint from the MPAA. Layered says it is working with both its client and the MPAA to provide information that has been requested.
