22-year-old Ryan Pitylak and his 40-year-old business partner Mark Trotter may have to fork out millions of dollars in damages if the latest suit by Texas Attorney Greg Abbott succeeds in nailing them. They are joined by technology giant Microsoft in suing the duo.
Pitylak, a student of the University of Texas, is allegedly behind the world’s fourth largest spam operation. Both he and partner Trotter are named in the lawsuit as controlling Leadplex LLC, Leadplex Inc. and PayPerAction LLC which have been conning recipients of their deceptively worded e-mail into opening them.
These e-mails contained hard sell language pitching services such as mortgage refinancing, even though they are not licensed to do such business in Texas. Consumers sometimes responded to these e-mails by providing additional information after being told that their privacy would be protected.
The hits and the data they thus got were then sold as sales leads to other companies for as much as $28 per lead. Over tens of millions of such deceptive spam e-mails were sent over MS networks.
