In a CNET article hosted on Yahoo they had a startling article on Internet security. It has been found that privacy systems for cookies in Microsoft’s new version of Internet Explorer can be bypassed in a very intriguing way using nothing more than the Microsoft media player. In affected versions of windows the media player contains a unique ID number that helps configure it with websites that use the media player as a plug-in. What some programmers and webmasters are reportedly doing is creating a JavaScript code that grabs the ID number of a person visiting the site and tracks it when they leave. You don’t even have to be running the media player for websites to do this. Upon being contacted Microsoft said that it had a patch to fix this problem.
