In what was dubbed as one of the most massive Piracy busts of the year a man was charged today after a legnthy investigation into a copyright and patent infringing operation that spanned many categories from electronics to toys. Capped by amazing co-operation between various American and Canadian law enforcement agencies.
The operation based in the far north of Canada’s territories was a complex operation that involved people sending in requests for items via email and postal mail and then reciving the items home delivered over night.
Nicolas Noel, 65 pleaded not guilty in a Anchorage, Alaska Federal Court today to charges of Copyright and Patent Infringement and Conspiracy.
If sentenced Noel may spend up to 30 years in state prison, among the items he is accused of pirating and fraudulently manufacturing are CD’s, Movie’s and Toys along with a wide variety of electronics and small trinkets.
The Feds launched thier investigation a year ago when a complaint jointly filed by the RIAA and MPAA regarding a sophisticated counterfiet ring that saw millions of millions of dollars in lost sales. This is the latest move in a bid by the industries to curb rampant royalty losses they say is due to the unauthorized duplication of Movies and Music and now even toys.
A joint statement read by RIAA Head, Mitch Bainwol goes as follows, “Today is a great victory for the battle against unauthorized copying of intellectual copyright, while we have been aware for a while about Mr. Noels activities, it is only today after amazing work by the FBI and Canadian Authorities that we are able to apprehend this dirty crook. As well I would like to thank our cousins in the toy industry for thier support. This will show without a doubt that infringement of any kind is theft and illegal and there is nowhere you can go to escape prosecution for such acts”
While the actual profit model of Noels operations are surrounded in confusion (no visible model of profitable distribution) and the alleged proceeds of crime have not been found the industries say the standing lesson is that no matter who you are or where you are, Piracy is wrong and whoever breaches the law will be tried to the fullest extent of the law.
