UK band Muse (on Warner Bros sub label East West) has, with the record company, created a new marketing tool for legitimate CD buyers. Hoping to offer something p2p and the internet can’t they have created software to allow the buyer to remix the title track (“Butterflies and hurricanes”) on the PC. The software appears on the CD and allows the user to change 8 parts of the songs in fairly basic ways. The user can then log on to the internet and enter the mix into a competition. The best mix wins a iPod mini.
Featured in a news article on Channel 4 last night, it was hoped that this would add a new dimension to CD singles and try and rescue the industry in a time of need.
It is unlikely that this particular idea will convert every customer back to buying CDs and not using the internet. However, new and novel ideas like this may help the industry claw back some of the market from p2p.
