P2PForums.com News:- Peer-to-peer file sharing has grown emensely since it’s debut in the days of Napster. Media coverage of the new craze which seems to attract endless amounts of potential sharers is at an all time high, which in turn of course draws in people much newer to computing technology. Unfortunately, this has also attracted people who plan to “get rich quick” from these newcomers. P2P scam sites have been popping up all over the net, and the problem has escalated somewhat out of control.
The aim of a scam site is to make hard cash from the end user by exploiting their current lack of understanding of these types of sites. This most commonly comes in the form of selling a free product available from an official distributor, installing spyware or dialers to unsuspecting newcomer’s computers and collecting personal information. P2PForums has a lengthy guide to avoiding these types of rogue sites here which explains this in more detail and also gives an up-to-date list of known scam domains.
It seems the P2P community has finally had enough of these parasites which prey on the unexperienced potential file sharer. Recently a site was set up going by the name “Take Back P2P” which is designed to increase the amount of bandwidth scam sites undergo by using the visitor’s bandwidth, the site manages to reload images on the scam sites at a rapid rate, therefore potentially causing a big increase in bandwidth usage which could either take the site down or cause the owner of the domain to end up paying more for bandwidth than the scam’s making – forcing him/her to cease operation of the site.
A new program has emerged called “WebStorm” which is based upon the Take Back P2P idea of fighting scam sites. This program acts much in the same way as the Take Back P2P website but also allows additional sites to be added, allows the user to select how much bandwidth is used and keeps track of the number of times pages have been reloaded or timed out.
