Today Sony announced a US version of its “Connect” online music store.
The service promises a “better selection than any other online download service”, licensing more than 500,000 tracks from all major and many independent music labels, as well as exclusive content from such artists as Avril Lavigne, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Snow Patrol, and Toby Lightman.
While the news of a larger selection of music sounds great, Sony is working to further fracture the digital music market by trying to enforce yet another audio compression standard. Files on Connect are compressed using Sony’s proprietary ATRAC3™ audio compression. Be careful when you purchase your gear, you may not be able to play songs you’ve purchased from any of these sites.
