Apple Releases Major iTunes Update

Apple released iTunes 4.5, iPod software 2.2, QuickTime 6.5.1 and relaxed iTunes Music Store restrictions: now music tracks purchased can be authorized to play on up to five other computers, instead of three. Apple has reduced the number of times you can burn a playlist to an audio CD from ten to seven. Another new feature is iMix, which allows you to publish playlists on iTunes to friends and fellow iTunes customers.

Instant Fame
You can rate iMixes posted by other music lovers, sending them up and down the charts. Of course, they get to rate yours, too, so you’ll need a thick skin, just like any artist who puts her creative works on public display. iTunes displays top-rated iMixes right on the album pages, so if you’re really good, you’ll see your mix right next to your favorite artist. And so will millions of other iTunes users, who can easily browse your other iMixes.

iMix and Match
Check out other people’s iMixes to discover hot new acts. Then buy music from an iMix as easily as any other listing. You’ll be delighted with the new music you find. And so will all the other users who find instant favorites from your list.

Some slashdot readers have mentioned that this release also changes Apples network sharing protocol, in such way that breaks/disables the open source iTunes sharing applications that have been released by members of the iTunes community.
