The San Diego FBI said Thursday that it served six search warrants as part of an international crackdown on groups trading illegally-downloaded music, movies and business and gaming software. Agents with the FBI’s Cybercrime Squad executed the warrants Wednesday at three homes and two businesses in San Diego County. No arrests have been made. More than 120 search warrants were served Wednesday in the United States and overseas as part of Operation Fast Link, which began in February. Operation Fast Link seeks to break up “warez” groups, which share copyright-protected material through peer-to-peer or other file-sharing networks.
According to the FBI, warez groups include “suppliers” who work in the music, gaming or movie industry; “crackers” who strip embedded source codes on materials and insert their own trademarks; “Q&As” who ensure the material works; and “distributors” who transmit the illegally downloaded products.
