321 Studios Hosts Series of Forums to Educate Consumers on Fair Use Paradox
ST. LOUIS, March 15 /PRNewswire/ — More than 700 digital rights supporters have signed up to participate in the 321 Studios-sponsored “Digital Rights Meetups” on Thursday, March 18. Facilitated by Meetup.com — the grassroots phenomenon that was instrumental in organizing Howard Dean’s campaign — these discussions are designed to get people engaged in a global discussion about consumer fair use issues and the new paradox in U.S. copyright law — consumers have fair use rights, but they can’t buy the tools to exercise them.
To date, consumers in 298 cities worldwide have registered to participate in the first Meetup, which will take place in cafes, restaurants and bookstores on March 18, 2004, at 7:00 p.m. in each time zone. The meetings will happen in any city that has five or more participants registered. Two additional Meetups will follow in April and May.
“We’re excited that so many people have signed up to be part of this global dialogue on consumer fair rights, and we are hopeful that even more will register between now and then,” said Robert Moore, President and Founder of 321 Studios. “Hollywood has launched a war against the American consumer. The Movie Studios convinced Congress and the courts to take away our rights to make back-up copies of our DVDs for personal use. It’s just not fair, and it’s not the American way.”
