Wired produced a couple of months ago, an excellent article about the state of DRM – or Digital Rights Management. This is a fairly long article, but it really gives a pretty deep understanding of what all the media companies are trying to move toward – total control of all content, via embedding control in the format. So, after reading this, two things:
- For some “freedom of content” to remain, open source formats (such as mp3) HAVE to remain the formats of choice for users. Because most of the newer and better formats (in terms of size, clarity) will have DRM built into them.
- Also, there is a very cool tonque in cheeck analogy made: By reading the article, you agree to have “rented” the content of this article for a month. After reading this article for a month, please renew your subscription for this article. So don’t be reading this article in a month, or you are breaking the law!!
I also think that this is what the anonymous poster was getting at, in that whole “coin model” analogy.
