A company called MediaDefender claims that it can stop filesharing on the Gnutella network, effectively shutting it down. It plans to flood the network with bogus files, and block the downloading of authentic ones. This rumour has been in circulation for a substantial amount of time now, and Limewire works fine for me at the moment.
