By typing the IP address (on a network, or on the internet) of anyone running Lan2P into the “add ip” box, you can easily create internet based Lan2P clusters.
After contacting smash via e-mail, I was able to uncover a few more details:
“hey ********. this internet-based option is not tested or supported, but I would think it would work just as well. the auto connection feature does not work because it does not “scan” beyond your local network. however, by connecting to one host on a Lan2P system (local or remote), it will find all available hosts and make as many connections as it can. plus, lan2p will remember what hosts you were connected to in the past and auto-connect you next time you run the software. so, i guess i can see this working, but i don’t know ’cause i haven’t really tried it out.
so I guess you could use this to create online decentralized networks after you make that first connection. or, you could have a server be always online and act as a router for others to get connected. (people could connect to that the first time to find others with an easy to remember address)
In light of this, for testing, I’ll launch a client on my server FOR TESTING ONLY and let it act as a remote host. People can share files if they want, but I’ve got nothing to do with it.
Add the IP: remote.lan2p.com
Spread this around if you want.
By the way, if you have a router you gotta forward port 1971 to whatever computer is running the Lan2P software.
This was originally not supposed to be allowed by a direct software block on adding internet IPs, but I don’t really care ’cause I forgot to put that in. oh well.

I guess this creates new opportunity for private, encrypted sharing in small networks. Not much opportunity, but it’s there.
