This article at The Register states that a Dutch Judge has given Consumer Empowerment (the owners of KaZaA and the FastTrack network) two weeks to cease all copywrite violations on their network. I would assume that it has been proven that the network is only partially decentralized and that Consumer Empowerment has the ability to update/restrict the protocol. I guess that’s one more corporation making money of off file sharing that will be sued out of existence. And of course, where KaZaA/FastTrack goes, Morpheus and Grokster will follow. Who’s next? -HH
From Slyck.com – Let’s think how long Napster took to comply with the RIAA’s request to halt “illegal” file-sharing. On Napster’s centralized network, this proved to be impossible, rendering Napster to its current status of Internet banishment.
Many have speculated that the FastTrack network would be impossible to stop. “The company’s attorney, Christiaan Alberdink Thijm, says that Kazaa cannot prevent users from swapping copyrighted music files. Unlike Napster, Kazaa links P2P users together directly to the Internet protocol addresses of other users, without central servers standing between them. As such, the attorney told Reuters, Kazaa cannot track files shared by users.” This quote is in direct contradiction with KaZaA’s CEO, who has not described how KaZaA will stop copyright infringement.
This will prove to be an interesting next couple of weeks, as FastTrack’s future will be thrown to the gauntlet. Will FastTrack follow the fate XoloX, Scour, Napster and CuteMX? Only time will tell. However, in the P2P world, we’ve learned that one can never get too complacent with just one file-sharing network.
