PeerGuardian-Your P2P Shield

Unitethecows.com recently got in touch with Method, Peerguardian developer, the application which we can believe is like a shield against the evil hidden inside many internet ways…

1) Bullet Could you tell us how monitoring and scanning an ip range was born? …the prehistory of PG in a word.

Method Well, to be honest I never really looked into the history of IP monitoring and blocking prior to PG in any detail. I know quite a lot of people were using firewall applications, netpeeker, etc. to identify patterns. People would occasionally find several IPs close together within one netblock which they were connecting to via P2P. I guess a lot of people were using this method to detect the spies/file-fakers/etc. and know that the people at kazaalite/klite forums/etc. were aware of the fake-file-flooding servers way before I was. There was also ZeroData’s p2p enemy blocklists, at first I added these lists to my site and collected other information such as known FBI traps (servers intentionally left vulnerable) and then started to add spyware IPs like GAIN, Xupiter, etc. But IP blocking certainly wasn’t new and most of the detection was done purely with firewall logs and some investigative work at that point.

2) Bullet So… PG is born in order to block p2p enemies, is it palliative or is it really of help?

Method Well, palliate can mean: to sooth; to lessen or abate; to ease without curing.. so if it’s palliative, it can still be helpful. But.. I think I know what you’re getting at, and as I’ve always said and will continue to say.. PG is not 100% protection, it won’t save everyone, it’s just contibutory to protection, it’ll help reduce the risk of getting caught or downloading fake files. The thing that makes PG beneficial is the amount of research that goes on behind the scenes (and for that I owe a lot to the people at peerguardian.net and other contributors), even down to the point of custom applications that can scan p2p networks to hunt down the organisations trying to attack and exploit p2p… we’re doing more than most people would expect. We’ve made no false claims, no exaggerations, no boasting. PG isn’t perfect, but the collaborative effort of all involved make it a reasonable contribution to protection and that’s what PG has always been about.. basically.. getting people working together to try and keep up to date with who’s attacking p2p.
