News.com interviews Skype creator

News.com is running a in-depth interview with Janus Friis, co-creator of Skype & KaZaA. Skype is a new method to phone friends and family over the internet using Peer-to-Peer technology. In Skype’s first week of beta testing, over 60,000 internet users downloaded the software. In an interview with CNET News.com, Friis discussed the upcoming challenges for VoIP, what Skype actually means (nothing, as it turns out) and a possible regulatory backlash against VoIP providers, among other issues.

“searchNetworking.com Definitions – VoIP (voice over IP – that is, voice delivered using the Internet Protocol) is a term used in IP telephony for a set of facilities for managing the delivery of voice information using the Internet Protocol (IP). In general, this means sending voice information in digital form in discrete packets rather than in the traditional circuit-committed protocols of the public switched telephone network (PSTN). A major advantage of VoIP and Internet telephony is that it avoids the tolls charged by ordinary telephone service. ”
