Grokster Goes “Gold”

Grokster is one of three peer-to-peer file sharing clients that is currently running on the Fast Track technology. It never quite hit the level of popularity of Kazaa, or former Fast Track member Morpheus. However it does have a wide following. This week the company released a pay version for $19.95 that is free of all the pop-up and third party software. “Although Grokster is free software, the only way that we can afford to give it away is by utilizing advertising and software bundling. But with Grokster Pro we can offer the user a better experience at a reasonable price that still allows us to pay our bills.” Said Grokster President Wayne Rosso.

While this isn’t a bad idea. Pop-ups are almost always rated the most annoying aspect of the internet experience by users. Also when aware of it users tend to not like the third party software that is bundled with many file swapping programs, commonly called “Spyware” or “Adware”. Without a doubt some Grokster users will happily pay the $20 bucks. However some users are already getting this experience for free.

A P2P enthusiast known as “Dr. Damn” has released free “clean” versions of several P2P’s including Grokster. The free, spyware clean Grokster is available here. As P2P has shown the record industry its hard to compete with free. So how much success the pay Grokster enjoys, remains to be seen. Grokster has been the most aggressive of the file sharing companies when it comes to taking action against “hacked” clean versions of their software.
