Kazaa Use Drops Day After RIAA Warnings

WASHINGTON — A popular Internet music-swapping service said it’s seeing fewer users online Thursday.

That follows an announcement by the music industry that it’s taking new steps to crack down on Internet music piracy.

The industry said Wednesday it will start searching Internet file-sharing networks, a first step toward filing lawsuits against computer users who illegally share music files on the Web.

The most popular software service for file-sharing — Kazaa — said the number of its users online has fallen about 16 percent on the day after the announcement.

But such numbers have gone up and down in the past — and it’s not known if the decline is a result of people fearing music-industry lawsuits.

The head of another popular file-sharing service has reported no apparent drop in users. And he predicted any drop in music-trading would pick up again within weeks.
