Music download chart to ignore non-subsribtion services

The Official UK Charts Company is planning a download top 40 chart that will receive its data from subscription services such as Pressplay and MusicNow. “Illegal” file-sharing networks such as FastTrack (KaZaA), Gnutella and WinMX will be ignored.

Most charts are based on sales data and have been scorned recently because they “do not reflect consumer choice”, according to critics.

“The way people buy their music is changing with new technology,” a spokesman for the Official UK Charts Company told Reuters on Wednesday. “We need to show that our charts are reflecting that.”

“Ultimately our long term goal is to see them incorporated with the singles charts.”
