Based on the feedback of our beta users we did a total re-write of PeerBuddy. It is now implemented as a true packet filtering firewall with almost zero CPU load. Our original implementation had much higher CPU loads since it searched for new TCP connections. By re-writing PeerBuddy from scratch and utilizing a new Windows API we have been able to hook into Windows at a low enough level to bring the CPU load down to almost zero after loading the blocklist.
Unfortunately those same API’s don’t exist for Win98, WinME and NT4.0 so we have removed them from our supported systems. New beta users are encouraged to join at http://www.isopleth.com/peerbuddy.htm. No Ad-ware, Spy-ware or viruses.
Our beta users parameters are now people with any of the following systems in any language:
OS:
Windows 2000 (Pro or Server)
Windows XP
P2P Client:
EMule
EDonkey
Kazaa(lite, diet, gold, original, K++)
Shareaza
Limewire
Our block list still blocks over 2,200,000 IP addresses. New additions to the list are being found daily.
PeerBuddy is a mini firewall for P2P (Kazaa, EMule, etc). The program filters out the IP addresses of people who share blank, or faked files and it prevents you from wasting your time downloading those bad files. This will help with your downloads since a number of organizations and individuals are sharing bad and blank files out there. It is also going to be blocking known email miners, stalkers, spammers and surveillance companies.
We are still working on adding, autoupdating of the block list, and ramping up our fake searching and detection system on our servers and improving our bad file sharing system reporting system as our final items prior to release.
