The first release candidate for Freenet 0.5.1 – the first major Freenet release since December, is now available from freenetproject.org.
Freenet has been described as “a mix of Usenet, the Web, and a RAID disk system, all fudged up into a super-crypto wet dream.” [link], and some see it as P2P’s Alamo in the fight against big media.
New features include:
- Address Resolution Keys or ARKs. These are basically an in-Freenet alternative to dynamic DNS services.
- New much more powerful HTML/CSS anonymity filter which will prevent a website on Freenet from tricking your web browser into giving you away
- Vastly improved large-file support incorporating “Forward Error Correction” and file “healing”. This means that you can now download files as large as (and larger than) 150MB from Freenet with surprising speed and reliability.
- Many many bug-fixes, with a particular focus on tracking down anything that may have been slowing down the network. Expect significant speed improvements once this release gets out there.
- New Windows installer and dramatic improvements to Windows-specific support code (Freenet itself runs on any platform that supports Java)
Those that have been disappointed by Freenet in the past may be pleasantly surprised by this release. More and more people are discovering what Freenet is and isn’t, and some of the things people are doing are quite interesting, for example, you can now download TV shows and movies from the network quickly and reliably.
It is important to note that this is not the official 0.5.1 release yet, however it will become 0.5.1 if no significant issues are discovered with it.
