Morpheus plagued with problems? Thousands of users reporting connectivity and technical problems with the popular file-swapping network. “Two weeks ago it was working fine,” one user reports, “…but for over a week now I can’t CONNECT.” Some users report network errors and connection problems even after applying the upgrade to a new 1.3.3 version. “I finally managed to connect, but now it says only 32 users are on the whole system. What’s going on with this thing??” said another user.
Many users, upon having software problems and also hearing that MusicCity Morpheus has just been sued, are fleeing the system for other networks, including AudioGnome, LimeWire, WinMx, DirectConnect, and AudioGalaxy.
The RIAA has reportedly joined forces with the Motion Picture industry on this lawsuit, and it is not limited to America, but also involves lawsuits in Europe, and the West Indies. Some users also reported ghost users on the Morpheus system, planted to collect infringement data on users and operators on the Morpheus system. In the past, the RIAA has enlisted tools such as SONGBIRD, a program which obtains IP addresses and piracy data on users.
“I used to say file sharing will never die,” one user reported, “and I was all cocky about the systems not getting shut down, but look at Napster, it’s useless now.” Another said, “Well, I don’t know if they are tracing users or not, and I doubt they’d go after me, but then again, you see how low they will go, and I’m not taking the chance! There’s plenty of other better systems out there. I’m outta there!”
The Morpheus system is a proprietary peer-to-peer system that some said was impossible to sue, however sources say the RIAA has found a way, indicative of their lawsuit being filed. Even if the lawsuit cannot be won, sources say the court case will target=_blank>drag MusicCity into financial troubles.
