Have you ever gone to see a movie and found that commercials for other movies were playing not just before the movie, but past the movies advertised starting time? Well it turns out that if you have, you’re not the only one. In a Variety News article hosted on Yahoo you’ll find the story of a High School teacher from the Chicagoland area that has gotten so fed up with this occurrence that she has actually filed a lawsuit with theatres for compensation for her lost time.
Teacher Miriam Fisch has had enough and has filed a class-action lawsuit with the Loews Cineplex chain, on behalf of all its patrons, to compensate for lost time due to negligent ad placement. The lawsuit seeks to redeem damages of up to $75 per patron, and for Loews to stipulate the screening times of both its movies and its advertisements.
Pre-movie ads were said to have generated an estimated 250 million dollars for movie theaters in 2002. Keeping in mind that the number of pre-movie ads shown is expected to increase by 30% in 2003, there is expected to be a large dollar increase from ads for movie theaters this year as well.
What will become of this lawsuit is yet to be seen. But taking into consideration that in European theatres, advertisement as well as movie times are posted at the box office as well as newspaper listings, we can only guess as to the possible outcome.
