Online music sales to be tracked

On Monday, the RIAA revealed a tracking system designed to trace music bought online. This Global Release Identifier (GRid) is similar to a UPC bar code in the way it works.

“Each track will be distributed with an individual GRid serial number. Like a bar code, it will be reported back to rights societies and collection agencies so that artists can be compensated for sales.”

Paul Jessop, chief technology officer of the International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI), stated that there are no intentions to track songs that leak onto file-sharing networks.
