It was really interesting to visit Midem (Music International Market) in Cannes (France) last week.
A few anti-P2P guys were there, including Overpeer’s Morgenstern and RetSpan’s Wang. Of course, it was impossible to have any kind of information from them about their business.
But here is what I’ve learned from different well-informed sources. The fact that these testimonies agree leave us in no doubt as to their customers.
Overpeer is actually working mostly for EMI-Virgin (especially for labels called Capitol, Virgin Records and EMI). They also have a few other small customers that are not really representative compared with EMI-Virgin : Wind-Up Records for the music industry, New Line for the movie industry, Sierra Entertainment and Infogrames for the video game industry.
That’s it. So do we really have to believe Overpeer when they claim that they give away 200.000.000 fake files per month, only for a few music albums from EMI-Virgin ?!? Come on…
On the other side, RetSpan said nothing about their results but they are working (now or in the near future) for almost every major company. They may already identify P2P users for Warner, Universal, Sony and EMI-Virgin. No information about BMG. RetSpan reportedly had also many private meetings at Midem with associations representing the music industry in France.
There is no doubt that many projects are on their way. To be continued…
