Ian Clarke, of Freenet fame, has released version 0.2 of Locutus. Locutus is something of a departure, both from Freenet, and from conventional file-sharing apps. It uses a completely new search algorithm, neither relying on Gnutella-style broadcasts, nor FastTrack-style “superpeers”. It is built on the .Net architecture, and they explain the logic behind this in their FAQ.
It is focused more on searching for documents than media files – and incorporates technology similar to that used in search engines like Google and Yahoo. Its user interface is very basic right now, but even if you aren’t connected to a network, it is a nice efficient replacement for Windows’s “find” tool.
This is still an early prototype, but they are keen to get your feedback.
