Verizon’s JetConnect, a new service for airfones, will be developing a new feature for the airfones installed in planes. JetConnect has announced that the new service will allow a flyer’s laptop to connect to phone jack and deliver IM service; specifically AOL IM and Yahoo IM. Other features include writing up to 160 characters of text to cell phones, and reading sports and news updates every 15 minutes. The price for these new features is $5, and will cover the entire flight period.
Claircom, an AT&T service and JetConnect’s competitor for airfones, has left the business because demand and use of airfones has gone done since the 1990s. That leaves 1,000 planes that used Claircom with serviceless airfones.
Currently, Verizon has airfones installed in 1,700 commercial aircrafts, in 14 airlines. They expect to have JetConnects features installed in 100 planes by the end of the year. To read more about this story: here.
With this type of advance, I believe that maybe in a few years a new company may come up with its own service for downloads during flights.
Just imagine flying from one state to another or another country downloading the MP3s you want to listen to while flying. Or downloading movies, etc.
