Zeropaid Interview: Ran Geva from URL Blaze

URL Blaze is probably the most interesting filesharing program to date. The main reason it: It’s not filesharing in the sense of the word. Napster, KaZaA, Shareaza, all share your files. Thus, it opens you up to a heap of copyright issues. But, URLBlaze does not. URLBlaze shares links, like Google or Yahoo!. By doing that though, it ensures that your file is 100% accurate. There are some other very advance features of this software, and it should be a player in the P2P world.

Zeropaid.com: What is URLBlaze? What type of network does it run on?

Ran Geva: URLBlaze is an independent P2P network that shares links instead of files. We tried to keep the software simple and to make the network connection totally automatic. When you start URLBlaze, it uses the IRC to find online users and cache them. URLBlaze V.2+ doesn’t support firewall/Private network so if a user is behind one, even if a connection to the network is established, incoming results are blocked by the firewall/router and port forwarding is needed (explained in the program help files).

Many times users that try URLBlaze for the first time, finds results only from the WEB-Based search (URLBlaze also does a parallel web-search) and doesn’t know they are blocking the incoming results from the Online community. Most of the quality results are from the online network.

Zeropaid.com: I hate the way that people download stuff from me, all it does is use bandwidth. Does URL Blaze do the same?

Ran Geva: No. When you are using URLBlaze your band width usage is kept to minimum because URLBlaze is all about links. You NEVER give access to your Hard drive to strangers, no one in downloading from you so you waist no band width while actually sharing links with the community.

If you insist on sharing files from your Hard drive, you can run the BadBlue server and URLBlaze know to automatically detect the files on your server and share them on the network.

Zeropaid.com: What are some misconceptions about URL Blaze?

Ran Geva: Actually because this concept is different there are many but I will mention only few:

  • It is important to remember that URLBlaze is NOT a file sharing program, but a link sharing network. Many people expect URLBlaze to be another file sharing program and they don’t understand the meaning of a URL sharing network. Unlike Kazaa or Gnutella, if you got even one result, MOST likely you will be able to download the file in a SUPER fast speed, because the download is from an Internet server. Most of the results you receive are verified so there is little chance you wont be able to download a file (unlike files sharing programs). Don’t get me wrong, I love Kazaa, WinMX, Edonkey and the rest, and I use them often, but before using a file-sharing program, I search URLBlaze app and forums. Finding a file on URLBlaze means NO fakes, and FAST downloads – worth the check.
  • Many users think that the best files are on the “File sharing” network and there in nothing on public web servers. Well they can’t be more wrong. The newest and rarest files are on the IRC, News groups, and many times are in the form of a URL to an FTP site or an HTTP server. I know the IRC and newsgroups are not for novice users, but here URLBlaze offer a midway solution. With UB you can find those hidden FTP/HTTP sites easily.
  • URLBlaze isn’t another FileMirrors site, the links on URLBlaze are added an updated in real time. You will find only the newest links to any kind of file on URLBlaze. URLBlaze verifies the existence of a file and even know to determine its true type (mime type) so even if a file appears to be a ZIP files (.zip) and it is actually an mpeg, URLBlaze will tell the difference.

Zeropaid.com: Is URL Blaze more legal than say KaZaA?

Ran Geva: URLBlaze is like a search engine where the crawlers are humans. Users of URLBlaze doesn’t share files, they only point to a place where they know the file exist. No one is distributing the file so you can’t hold one liable for distributing an illegal file. You cannot say the same thing about traditional files sharing programs.

Zeropaid.com: What type of system of filesharing is the future? Do you think KaZaA could be one way or do you think Link sharing is THE wave of the future?

Ran Geva: I think that URLBlaze is only a start. File sharing, link sharing are only a small part of the concept. I think that the future of sharing is DATA sharing. Anything from files/link sharing to IP/ISP sharing. The more pressure the authorities will put on the anonymity and freedom of speech on the internet the more developers will develop a way to get pass it. When building a distributed network where you share your ISP, IP, links, sites, and files no one can stop or track its users. So I think we are at a beginning of an era.

Zeropaid.com: Any Spyware or other garbage in URL Blaze?

Ran Geva: I am glad you asked me. There are two main *false* accusations we keep hearing off:

1) Adaware detects “ubmon.dll” as a BHO and alerts about it, people then think URLBlaze is a spyware. “ubmon.dll” is indeed a BHO (browser Helper Object), we use it to save the links a user is making using IE. The links are saved on the user’s HD. After all, URLBlaze is all about link sharing, and we need to save those links. BHO is a Microsoft technology and you can find more info about it here: Microsoft. It is true that some programs are using this technology to spy on its users, but URLBlaze uses BHO to monitor clicks on links – Just like Getright, Download-accelerator or Gozilla. URLBlaze does NOT and will NEVER spy on its users. If you wish not to share links, you can choose to do so from the program’s control panel.

2) Bundled software. To keep the development alive we need money (well that’s the world we live in), URLBlaze is a freeware so that’s why we bundled the Download accelerator plug-in inside. A user can decide if he wishes to install it or not. This software was discussed on Adaware website and was not declared as a spy ware. We made sure this program doesn’t spy on our users, and we value the privacy of our users. Everything about this bundled software is disclosed on the disclaimer before you install the program.

URLBlaze is not a spyware and will never be one. We respect and value our users, we wouldn’t want anything to jeopardize their privacy. I know as I am writings this lines that some readers will still don’t find our answers satisfactory. They are welcome to visit our forums and discuss the issues, unfortunately many times we read on forums “expert” opinions from users who just yesterday learned about cookies – it’s a shame.

Zeropaid.com: Here are some of those special people talking: “I LOVE rare mp3′s. But I can’t find them since Audiogalaxy left!” Would URL Blaze be a viable alternative for them?

Ran Geva: I would have to say that URLBlaze app/forums will be the right place for them. Our forums are packed with Http/Ftp servers with Gigabytes of Multimedia. URLBlaze community is always glad to help. URLBlaze is all about sharing, and “help and be helped” is our motto.

In addition to finding files, many URLBlaze users found friends.

Zeropaid.com: Anything else you want to say to the people of Zeropaid and the world?

Ran Geva: I would like to say thank you to the developers and pioneers of the best file sharing programs out there. I would like to thank the users who share and contribute. Remember there is no way to stop the progress, and I think each and everyone here should think of himself as a “Flower Child” of the 21th Century. This is just the beginning.

Thank you for giving me this opportunity to tell the world about URLBlaze – World’s First URL Sharing Network

So come-on become a URLBlazer and you also get addicted.
