The ballyhooed CintoA “secure self-publishing system” for Morpheus is finally coming online at the MusicCity web site. Here we see an example of a shaky legal defense (“substantial legitimate use”) disguised as a business model (“ripping off desperate indie bands”).
Obviously rushed online as Streamcast heads into court to launch a summary judgement motion, only one band, “Yankee Gay” has been packaged thus far, and the actual commerce portion is not implemented – meaning nobody can actually BUY the tracks. What’s more, the CintoA technology is completely separate and removed from the Morpheus P2P file sharing application; the audio file licensing, playback and interactive elements happen within a web browser window.
[CintoA actually froze and crashed my XP computer twelve seconds into the first playback, but functioned OK after a restart. Not sure whether others will encounter that issue; regardless, save your work before trying!]
