One of the biggest features announced was the Dolby Digital surround-sound, which no other media player can offer when encoding high quality DVD’s. When DVD’s are encoded correctly using WMP 9, DVD rips are flawless. Microsoft claims a 20% gain in efficiency over the last version of WMP, claiming the off-loading of tasks to the graphics chip improved performance within the player. Buffering has also been eliminated from WMP 9, which allows for immediately playback/streaming of media. (“Fast Streaming also automatically optimizes the delivery of streaming audio and video to take advantage of the full bandwidth available to the user, which vastly reduces or eliminates the impact of congestion on the Web for broadband users.”) A first in Internet streaming, many claim that this feature is an attack on RealNetworks, which leads the online digital software market by 2%.
The new version of WMP acts like an ecosystem for artists who want to protect their work from online pirates. Artists can now elaborate and adjust DRM settings inside WMP 9, DRM encoding is available but not mandatory due to a federal judge.
