informationweek.com tells us about a new software that puts ‘guards’ in applications to fend off attacks and repair things when damage is done.
When the collective resumés of advisers to a security-software startup contain former top guns at the Department of Defense, the National Security Agency, and the Navy, odds are a company might be worth investing in.
So may be the case with Arxan Technologies Inc., an anti-tampering-software app maker that has raised $3 million in funding. The company’s security tools are designed to reduce piracy, hacking, and intrusion by stationing “guards” in systems. “Think of it as inoculating software–the guards are antibodies injected in the code,” Arxan CEO Richard Earley says. “The guards realize they’re under attack, defend against the attack, and then have self-healing abilities.”
Already, the beta product has passed lab evaluations by hackers, the NSA, and the Internal Revenue Service, among others. “They weren’t able to break it,” Earley says.
The company’s board includes Craig Fields, former director of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, and retired Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minihan, former director of the NSA and the Defense Intelligence Agency. Arxan’s technology advisory board isn’t too shabby either, with Rebecca Bace, former head of intrusion-detection research at the NSA, and A.L. Andreassen, a former technical adviser for Naval Warfare.
