The primary objective of FileDonkey initially was to render obsolete eDonkeyBot and other similar software, which essentially acts as distributed denial of service (DDOS) agent and already has managed to bring edonkey network on its knees more than once.
FileDonkey employs a custom made crawler which is based on a standard eDonkey client and strictly complies with eDonkey client protocol. This crawler periodically runs searches in eDonkey network and all the collected information is stored. Later this information is being indexed and after few statistical algorithms were applied is transferred to a database. When a surfer runs a search this database is being used directly by FileDonkey.com website.
It cannot be stressed enough that major impact on the quality and relevance of FileDonkey.com search is made by complex analytic and data indexing algorithms, not by the crawler. The crawler itself is quite trivial, but nevertheless is very effective and it does not create excessive load on the edonkey network. It should be noted, that the change was accepted by many people as a reasonable compromise. At the moment, tag [found via www.filedonkey.com] is being added to most files which are being downloaded using our website and we do not see any reasons to change it.
