Fake Files Becomes Big Problem

Certain record labels have been flooding online swapping services with bogus copies of popular songs. The problem has been there for a while but has mushroomed in the last 3 months. “It’s more prevalent in the last three months, It’s gotten real, real, real severe.” say Streamcast Networks. File Sharing programs are hitting back. Several methods are been used to stop fake files:

  • Many file sharing programs like Bearshare now include strong filters.
  • Other methods include weblinks to the hash code of files. This is in edonkey, available via a plug in to FastTrack (Kazaa, Grokster, iMesh) and will be in Blubster 2.0
  • Morpheus 2.0 will include a rating mechanism that will allow users to identify fake files and a method of certifying users as legitimate users
