Ever since the rise of Napster more than three years ago, Internet users have expected peer-to-peer file-swapping services to be free of charge. During its heyday, you could download the Napster client for free. After a March 2001 federal court ruling that the popular service was in violation of copyright laws, myriad services that sprung up in its place were free as well, including iMesh, KaZaA, Morpheus, and WinMX, as well as a host of Gnutella clients.
