“Young, male, wired, music rippers … A digitized demographic that’s turning the music industry on its head. Illegal downloads and CD bootlegging were the reasons Eminem’s record label released his new album ‘The Eminem Show’ nine days early in late May. The recording industry is scrambling to adjust to the new digital marketplace. Eminem is seen here performing in 2001.

“More than 40 million Americans have downloaded music from one of the file-sharing services such as Kazaa or Morpheus, according to IPSOS-Reid, a Minneapolis research firm that tracks consumer behavior. At least 41 percent of 12-through-17 year-olds claim to have downloaded music or an MP3 file from the file-sharing services and nearly half, or 45 percent, of 18-through-24 year-olds (considered the prime music buying demographic) indicate they have downloaded songs from one of the networks like Audio Galaxy or Grokster. Of Americans 35-to-54 years-old, 14 percent report having downloaded music or an MP3 file from the Internet. ‘The idea of file-sharing and peer-to-peer networks is becoming a more general population phenonmenon,’ said Matt Kleinschmidt, senior research manager at the research company…
