Hi guys. I am not by any means a programmer, but I do read ZP with enthusiasm. I’ve discovered a KaZaA client for the Mac, and its worth looking into.

Neo scans through IP ranges looking for KaZaA hosts, indexes their file list, and stores them locally on your hard drive. Advantages of a “shadow” client:
– Only possible way to get Kazaa files for a third party
– Customizable scan/search range
– Include only IPs from your University or ISP
– Possibly results in much better speeds
– Subverts most school’s download limits
(if you use only intra-school ip addresses)
– Instant searches
– File index is loaded into memory, making searches
nearly instantaneous, even if you have hundreds of
gigabytes of files indexed.
– No login/password requried for Kazaa network (anonimity)
Disadvantages of a “shadow” client:
– You must scan and discover hosts before searching
– Potentially less overall content to search through
– Some features (multi-source downloading, metadata) unvailable
How does it work?
Neo uses a brute-force method to find Kazaa hosts. Given a user-defined IP address range, Neo will “scan” that portion of the Internet, looking for computers that respond on Kazaa’s port. These IP ranges can become very large, and therefore take a considerable amount of time to scan. A range of 65,025 computer, such as 128.211.xx.xx currently takes about six hours, but should be improved in future versions. When a Kazaa host is found, Neo gets a list of all the shared files and their filesizes. Neo then writes this information to disk, and it is the content that Neo actually searches through. It is neccessary to scan and index hosts before you can search and download files with Neo.
