New Roku 3 available for online order for $99 has improved hardware and redesigned user interface for a faster experience.
Customers who have been holding off on buying the Roku 2 XS might want to reconsider the purchase as the Roku 3 is now available for purchase for $99. Aside from the sleeker, curvier design, there have been numerous improve the media player. The Roku 3 has been outfitted with a dual-band 2.4GHz-5GHz Wi-Fi, which gives the device a wider range and faster downloads. The device will also have USB ports and a microSD card slot. The device itself is capable of 7.1 and 5.1 surround sound. For those that are interesting in private listening, the Roku 3 has also updated the Roku remote to include a headphone jack.
On software side, the Roku 3 will launch with a new user interface designed to maintain Roku’s simplicity while also making it easier to navigate through the now 750+ channels available on the Channel Store. The home screen has a list of channels to the right and a menu to the left that lists My Channels, the Channel Store, Search, and Settings. Those that own a Roku 2 , Roku HD (model 2500), Roku LT, and the Roku Streaming Sticks will receive the software update sometime in April.
While the Roku 3 will replace the Roku 2 XS, it will still have many of the same types of functions like showing full 1080p HD video, connecting to services like Hulu Plus and connecting to the internet via an ethernet port. Additionally, the new remote can also be used for motion-sensing games like Angry Birds or just a regular remote.
The Roku 3 can be purchased online from Roku or Amazon starting Wednesday for $99. It’ll be available for purchase in retail stores in April.
