Mega Tops 3 Million Users One Month After Launch

File-sharing site co-founder Kim Dotcom says the site has more than 3 million users exactly one month to the day after it launched, and is most popular in France, Spain, Brazil, Germany, and the USA.

It’s been exactly one month since the Megaupload file-sharing site relaunched as Mega, and it already sports more than 3 million users.

According to a recent tweet by co-founder Kim Dotcom, the site now has more 3 million users and hosts more than 125 million encrypted files.

He also tweeted that the top 5 Mega traffic countries are (in apparently no particular order) France, Spain, Brazil, Germany, and the USA.

It’s not altogether surprising considering that Mega has been bombarded by user traffic since its debut last month. Right out of the gate the site struggled to stay online due to heavy traffic, and more than 250,000 users signed up in the first few hours alone.

A few days later it quickly surpassed long-standing cloud-storage companies RapidShare and DropBox to become one of the world’s most popular companies, though the proverbial shine has since worn off as the latter two have since outpaced Mega in popularity.

Though the tables may once again turn after Kim Dotcom announced over the past weekend that the site plans to do what has never been done before, and expand into into other areas of secure cloud storage.

“In the coming years #Mega plans to expand from secure cloud storage to secure email, chat & voice, video and “mobile,” tweeted co-founder Kim Dotcom.

Considering that the US authorities can access anybody’s data stored on US servers, the prospect of overseas-based encrypted cloud storage is sure to entice many (myself included).

Stay tuned.
