Facebook Launches Poke App for Self-Destructing Messages

Send text, photos, and videos to Facebook friends and set to delete itself after 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds; if the recipient takes a screenshot a flash icon will appear.

Facebook has introduce a new app for the iPhone and iPod touch called Facebook Poke that serves as a suped-up stand-alone version of the familiar site feature.

“Today we’re announcing Poke, an iPhone app that makes it fun and easy to say hello to friends wherever you are,” noted the Facebook Blog. “The poke feature has been a part of Facebook since 2004. Now we’re excited to share a new poke experience for mobile.”

What makes the Facebook Poke app so interesting, however is that you can send text, photos, and videos to Facebook friends and then set them to self-destruct after a specified period of time (1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds).

“With the Poke app, you can poke or send a message, photo, or video to Facebook friends to share what you’re up to in a lightweight way,” adds Facebook. “You can poke an individual friend or several at once. Each message expires after a specific time you’ve set, either 1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds. When time runs out, the message disappears from the app.”

Poke is pretty unforgiving when it comes to viewing messages, and there’s no chance of recovering them if you cant read, hear, or watch the entire thing. Once you press and hold the notification to see your new poke, the countdown timer starts, and there’s no going back.

So how does it work? It’s simple.

1. Choose one or more friends to poke.

2. Attach a message, photo or video.

3. Choose how long they can see it (1, 3, 5 or 10 seconds).

4. Say where you are when you poke (optional).

For those concerned your friends might try to take a screenshot before it self-destructs, a flash icon will appear and alert you that that has happened. You can’t prevent it outright, but surely a quicker delete time would do the trick.

So what do you think? Is Facebook Poke something you would use?

Stay tuned.
