Foundd is a new service that enables you to find entertainment you’ll love.
Foundd is a new personalized search engine that helps you find entertainment you love, and prevents “which movie should we watch?”-based arguments with your friends and family too.
Simply sign up for the free web app, rate at least 10 movies (so Foundd has some idea about your cinematic tastes), and watch the recommendations start to flow in. The best part about the service is that your friends and family can also sign up and get their own recommendations. When you want to watch a movie together, Foundd will pick movies it thinks you’ll both enjoy.
When you initially log on to Foundd, the app asks you to rate 10 movies, or click “Don’t Know” if you haven’t seen them. Then, it populates a list based on your answers, giving each movie the rating it thinks you would give.
With each movie in the list, you have several options. You can rate movies you’ve already seen (in which case they disappear from the list and Foundd uses the rating to hone its recommendations further), or click the “X” at the top if you’re not interested in a particular movie. If you’re interested, but not sold, Foundd provides more information about the film, and a link to the trailer.
When you rate a film, Foundd immediately provides another recommendation based on the new rating.
Once you’ve decided on what to watch, click the relevant link to stream the movie through Netflix, or, if you don’t have a Netflix account, rent or purchase the film through iTunes.
After providing about 20 ratings, the app gives you the opportunity to create a group watch list. Add friends to this list, and Foundd recommends movies based on both your suggestions. While this is a clever features, the only way to find friends is by connecting your Foundd account with Facebook, which could deter some people from using this feature.
Foundd is based on the philosophy that you should spend your time with entertainment you love. The four Berlin-based co-founders recognized that the internet has given us access to great content for every taste, but that there was no easy and effective mechanism to match the two and filter out the noise.
The service acts like a personalized content curator. The more you rate movies through the service, the more accurate its suggestions will be. The service also provides you with personalized recommendations based on other people who share your preferences.
As a web app, the interface is very slick, and intuitive to use. There’s everything you need to know to make a decision about a movie, but the screen isn’t crowded.
More importantly, the accuracy of Foundd’s suggestions is pretty interesting. The ideas definitely become more relevant and helpful the more ratings you provide, but it is good at providing a variety of movies across different genres.
Having gathered over 1 million ratings just five days after its launch in July, the Foundd team are now aiming to extend the service to cover TV shows, internet videos, entertainment apps, video games and books.
