Fully embraces own doctrine that “the only way to control your content is to be the best provider of it.”
Norwegian state broadcaster NRK has decided to set up its own BitTorrent tracker and plans to use it to begin offering content “on a more regular basis.”
“The tracker is based on the same OpenTracker software that the Pirate Bay has been using for the last couple of years,” it says in a statement. “But it will only be used to distribute content from the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK).”
NRK started looking into using BitTorrent for distributing content after seeing how much of its own programming was already available on BitTorrent tracker sites.
“This technology makes it possible for us to make our content available in a very high quality without having to invest in large server farms and expensive bandwidth,” it said at the time.
It conducted a series of tests last year to see how viable the system would be, allowing users to download episodes of the popular series “Nordkalotten 365.”
“By using BitTorrent we can reach our audience with full quality media files,” it observes. “Experience from our early tests show that if we’re the best provider of our own content we also gain control of it.”
The last comment is what it terms the “The NRKbeta doctrine,” and it’s a maxim that some brilliant minds here in the US have realized as has been the case with “South Park” and the “Daily Show with John Stewart.”
“The first show we’re putting on our new tracker is a very popular television series about people living in remote places in Norway,” says NRK. “It features fascinating people and spectacular scenery.
The show is called “Der ingen skulle tru at nokon kunne bu” or “Where no one thought it would be possible for anyone to live,” and actually looks pretty interesting.
