Zeropaid Interview: MamiyaOtaru

About one week ago, Limewire Team was interviewed. Under the GPL, developers are able to take Limewire’s source code and create their own versions of the popular Gnutella program. AquaLime is one of those programs that was changed using Limewire’s source code. Zeropaid was lucky enough to interview MamiyaOtaru, creator of AquaLime.

Zeropaid.com: What does AquaLime have that the user can’t get from Limewire?

MamiyaOtaru: I’d almost prefer to say what it doesn’t have that a user can get from Limewire. It has no spyware, and no ads. Of course it does have some other stuff, the new look being first and foremost.

Dr. Fileshare Information: Got Spyware? Get AdAware!

Zeropaid.com: Anything new in the code itself?

MamiyaOtaru: Right now it’s just Aqua, but I and some other open source guys are working on making a version where the user can choose a skin.
I’ve only made small tweaks to the core itself. Just fixed little annoyances like the way Limewire always creates ’shared’ and ‘incomplete’ directories where you don’t want it to.

Zeropaid.com: Does it take care of freeloaders?

MamiyaOtaru: Only in the same way Limewire does, or can. That’s a good idea though, I might tweak the freeloader settings a bit. I hate freeloaders as much as anyone

Zeropaid.com: Any ideas on how to solve freeloading problems?

MamiyaOtaru: I don’t think there is a way to make it go away completely. I think eDonkey2000 does a very good job of minimizing it with its partial downloads. Remember: If you’re downloading something, you’re sharing too!

Zeropaid.com: Does the AquaLime Skin speed up, or slow anything down in Limewire?

MamiyaOtaru: I use a modified version of the SkinLF package to skin Limewire. Unfortunately, SkinLF is not optimized for java 1.4.0, so with 1.4.0 there is a speed hit. In java 1.3.1, the speed should be about the same. AquaLime used to run faster because I took out the XML, but Limewire has since fixed their XML bug after I and others pointed it out.

Zeropaid.com: Has Limewire ever contacted you?

MamiyaOtaru: I am in fairly regular contact with Adam. I’ve submitted a few small code changes, and a couple bugs.

Zeropaid.com Retro-Interview: Zeropaid.com did an interview with the Limewire Team. Check it out Here!

Zeropaid.com: Do you talk about merging the two, AquaLime and Limewire?

MamiyaOtaru: There is currently a skins branch of Limewire in the CVS, utilizing some changes I have made. He has said that Skins may be incorporated into Limewire 3.0, whenever that comes.

Zeropaid.com: Do you get anything from people purchasing Limewire Pro?

MamiyaOtaru: Nope. Afaik, open source contributors to Limewire don’t. I’m pretty much just doing it for the heck of it anyway

Zeropaid.com: Since you are contributing beneficially, do you at all compare yourself to Clean Limewire?

MamiyaOtaru: I think Clean LimeWire and I came at it from different angles. My objective was to skin Limewire , making it clean was secondary. Interestingly, I have heard from Clean LimeWire that they are looking at making a skin able version. Add to that the other open source people, like Stephan Webber, who are working on skins, I wonder if there is really a point for me to continue with it.

Zeropaid.com: You were the first, correct?

MamiyaOtaru: As far as I know, yes.

Zeropaid.com: What are your plans for AquaLime?

MamiyaOtaru: Well, as long as I don’t get sick of it, I’ll try to continue putting out new versions within a day or so of new Limewire versions. I’m always tinkering with the layout of the UI as well, looking for something that pleases me. Someday, it would be cool to add some open nap support. There is at least one java open nap package floating around. Once I get smarter (distant future) it would be fun to try and paste it into Limewire.

Zeropaid.com: What languages can you program in?

MamiyaOtaru: Qbasic lol. Check my page for my crowning Qbasic achievement Aside from that, I know java best (for better or worse) and I do some C++.

Zeropaid.com: The amazing 3D car game, created in the amazing, most useful code of Qbasic. How long did that take you to create?

MamiyaOtaru:About 2 weeks

Zeropaid.com: Do you have any plans to create your own File Sharing network?

MamiyaOtaru: I think the file sharing “market” is pretty saturated already (this is ignoring whether I even could in the first place).

Zeropaid.com: Do you think Napster was the pinnacle of P2P’s success?

MamiyaOtaru: I think it was the pinnacle of MP3 sharing. Not P2P in general, since it was focused only on music.

Zeropaid.com: Is Gnutella the future of file sharing?

MamiyaOtaru: I think so. I can’t see Gnutella ever going away.

Zeropaid.com: Anything you’d like to say to Zeropaid.com and the rest of the world?

MamiyaOtaru:

To Limewire – Thanks for opening your code.

To UniteTheCows.com – Thanks for hosting AquaLime!

To Zeropaid.com – Thanks for your work keeping everyone up-to-date.

To The World – Don’t pass laws to protect profit, figure out new ways to make it. Capitalism is dynamic, deal with it.
