UK Youth Survey: 61% Say Music Should be Free

A majority also say it’s morally acceptable to download music illegally using P2P.

Marrakesh Records, a small UK-based Indie label, have released the results of a new “Youth and Music Survey” provides a fascinating insight into the attitudes of the music industry’s most important demographic group.

The report is based on the responses given by over 1,000 individuals aged 15 to 24yo.

The results paint a fairly bleak picture for the current business model employed by the music industry with an astonishing 61% saying they do net feel they should have to pay for the music they want to listen to on the Internet, and fully 70% stating they don’t feel guilty about downloading music for free from the Internet!

The average price that respondents think is fair to pay for a CD album is just £6.58 ($9.47 USD). For a download album the average drops to £3.91 ($5.63 USD) and for a download single the average is 39p (56 cents).

On average 43% of the music owned by the group as a whole was obtained without paying for it. This increases to 49% for 15-19 year olds.

Perhaps even more disturbing is the importance music has in their lives. Some 60% of 16-24yos would rather go without sex than music for a week. This increases to 70% for 16-19yos.

I don’t remember music ever being more important than sex in my life. Do you?

Either way, the report shows the tough road ahead for the music industry as it fights to stay relevant. Digital music distribution has democratized the record industry and made labels increasingly irrelevant. With youth growing accustomed to downloading music for free, and also having no moral qualm with it it had best try to finally give customers what they want instead of merely telling them what they can’t have all the time.

No one in the music industry is going to pay attention to this study (officially).

But music more important than sex? Geesh. I wonder what they think about gaming?
