Armed Islamic militants attempted to storm the U.S. Embassy in a brazen attack Tuesday, the government said. Four people were killed, including three of the assailants. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but an al-Qaida offshoot group was suspected, Syria's ambassador to the United States said.

No Americans were hurt in the attack, in which the militants used automatic rifles, hand grenades and at least one van rigged with explosives.

The al-Qaida offshoot group, called Jund al-Sham, has been blamed for several attacks in Syria in recent years, the Syrian ambassador, Imad Moustapha, said in comments to CNN.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice praised Syrian security agents for repelling the attack, but added it was too early to know who may have been behind it.

"I think it's very early to try and speculate why this may have happened," said Rice, speaking at a news conference in Nova Scotia Tuesday with her Canadian counterpart, Peter MacKay.

The attackers apparently did not breach the high walls surrounding the embassy's white compound in the city's diplomatic neighborhood.

Now that is a BIG surprise. Maybe the Americans shouldn't be taking such a tough line with Damascus.

What tough line is that? Telling them to quit allowing terrorists and weapons to go into Iraq and kill our troops and Iraqi civilians?

Man, do we hate America or what......

Lets blame Syria for America getting owned in Iraq. Damascus could have quiet easily let this attack occur, why they didn't is something i'm still trying to figure. For an "evil" power, it sure did protect the US embassy well at the cost of one of its soldiers. To much Fox News. Why do Americans get all patriotic :icon_salu when someone gives them a bt of shit about what they are doing around the world, talk about sand in the vagina. I'm not attacking anyone personally its debate, its what keeps forums ticking and people joining, and money rolling.

I've said it so many times before, and i'll say it again, I DON'T HATE AMERICA, RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

Sorry about the "hate America" bit......just saying that Syria allows not onlt terrorist organizations HQs like Hezbollah, Hamas, and others on its soil, and allows people and arms to be transported through and from its country.

BTW, hate FOX News, I like real news not analysis....... :)
