So google's launching a new email service called [link="http://news.com.com/2100-1032_3-5182805.html?tag=nefd_top"]gmail[/link]. 1GB of storage... that's 1337... bet it's got POP access too. I'm gonna switch. gmail.google.com is up.

Anyone else think they might switch?
  2. You see, they got you. Poor Fool.

This must be some sort of joke since it's on April Fools

    1gb of storage
    Gmail from Google

Google has sprung a surprise on the net late Wednesday (the day before April Fool), announcing availability of gmail.com. Google will allow "gmail" users to accumulate 1gb of free mail archives (highly searchable) online in return of display of their money-making ad-word text adverts alongside messages. Whee! Get adverts for discount drugs alongside spam for viagra! The service has apparently been quietly in beta among google employees for a year. The exact signup date, important in order to get grab coveted names, has not been announced.

How can google offer 1000mb free when others are so stingy? Back of the envelope math: commodity hardware favored by the google server farm means a 160gb drive can hold 160 customers, then it costs google just a few dollars per user in hardware (and this will get cheaper). On the other hand, google gets the chance to show text adverts that attract click-through revenue of up to a few bucks.

According to Alexa, MSN gets almost 80% of its traffic from hotmail. Yahoo gets a smaller but still high percentage. Offering an attractive mail solution is the best way to get eyeballs. The domain will also attract spammers like flies. Whether google can control spam or not will probably ultimately decide the success of gmail.</FONT>

But the whole "day before April fools" will convince some. To me thats playing dirty, if you cannot fool someone ON April 1st, dont bother, instead of resorting to sucker punches like this (Day before April 1st)

    I don't think it's a joke.
Google should have gotten into the webmail ring a while ago. If it were a joke it would be like mocking all those who want to see google webmail. I read in a google employee's blog that he had been using gmail. If it were an april fools joke, it would be the mother of all letdowns.

That article makes it look convincing, but until i hear otherwise it is a joke.

BTW, they said they will limit the size of individual attachments to 10 megs. Perfect for MP3 sharing.

I do agree that this was an April Fool's joke.

However, there has been legitimate talk of Google and getting into the webmail business. I think it'd be great.

Oh wow, I can see MSN Hotmail losing tons of users because of their stingy capacity....

Maybe part truth part joke. Its possible they ARE getting into email. But I think any free service will be limited like hotmail and yahoo are. Bandwidth it alot for 1GB per user. I think thats a part of their April Fools joke.

Besides, even if they did start this, the RIAA and mpaa would have it shut down in 20 mins. All it would be used for is trading music and movies. LOL

    Its a joke.
  14. I dont think the email thing is a joke. And why publish the lunar thing and the gmail thing simultaneously. My bet is that this is in part a competitive strategy to put Yahoo, etc, in their place

I saw it a few days ago...it's not April Fools', that's their lunar plan that is for April Fools' Day...it's in beta...and functioning...I signed up for a beta..they'll email me ...about...now
  16. Well if its true, it is not 1GB, Its 1000mb (24 short of a gig). No POP3 access and a couple of google's adsense ads, which means that a program will scan your messege for certain keywords that will determine the ads that will be displayed. And in the end Google squashes Yahoo, hotmail, Lycos & Excite (they still exist) and we have a new monopoly just in time for their IPO,

I can't wait until the new E-Mail service is available from Google and everyone I know is also planning to sign up. How can you beat a service like this - 1 Gb size for your E-Mail .Thats far larger than Hotmail or Yahoo. Who in their right mind wouldn't sign up ? I have the Google toolbar installed with Mozilla Firefox and Google News Canada is my home page. Face it,
Google Rocks !!!!!! I also don't believe that they are in danger of swamping the competition.
I could see just the opposit happening. With Google entering the E-Mail field, Hotmail and Yahoo will have to offer more to stay competitive and that competition between the major companies is good news for us . :green4
