Foobar2000

Foobar2000 is a versatile audio player for the Windows platform. Initial installation only provides you with basic audio control and compatibility. What makes Foobar2000 a powerful player is the ability to download various components giving the user the opportunity to mold Foobar2000 into whatever audio experience you want. That and a reputation for using few system resources make Foobar2000 an ideal choice. Lite, Normal, and Special download options are available to better fit your needs.

Foobar2000 is a freeware audio player for Windows developed by Peter Pawlowski, a former freelance contractor for Nullsoft. Featuring a minimalist interface, it also boasts many features for metadata support and high-quality audio output. The theoretical maximum sampling rate and bit depth for audio output are both far in excess of the capacities of even professional-grade audio equipment.

To maximize the audio fidelity of consumer-grade equipment, it provides noise shaping and dithering. It features a number of official and third-party components which add many additional features. While the core is closed source, the author provides an extensive SDK under the BSD license, which also includes the source code for most of the components.

Here is a list of the features of Foobar2000:

  • Open component architecture allowing third-party developers to extend functionality of the player
  • Audio formats supported "out-of-the-box": WAV, AIFF, VOC, AU, SND, Ogg Vorbis, MPC, MP2, MP3, MPEG-4 AAC
  • Audio formats supported through official addons: FLAC, OggFLAC, Monkey's Audio, WavPack, Speex, CDDA, TFMX, SPC, various MOD types; extraction on-the-fly from RAR, 7-ZIP & ZIP archives

  • ReplayGain support
  • Low memory footprint, efficient handling of really large playlists
  • Advanced file info processing capabilities (generic file info box and masstagger)
  • Highly customizable playlist display

  • Most of standard components are opensourced under BSD license (source included with the SDK)
