Skype has announced that their video messaging features is now ready for release on Windows, Mac, iPhone, iPad, Android and Blackberry. Although one of the most popular VoIP service, Skype continues to improve their features in order to keep customer retention high. The newest addition is the much awaited video messaging feature. This feature had been available by beta since February, but after testing and feedback, Skype has finally announced the official release. The video messaging feature allows users to record a message for a contact that they can view later on. A sort of video voicemail so to speak. The beta version had a cap on the number of messages in place for free users, though premium subscribers had access to unlimited use.

Late last month, a report by the IP Commission caused a stir amongst advocates. Among the recommendations was the call to hack into an alleged copyright infringer’s computer and either delete infringing material, lock down the computer altogether, or physically destroy the computer entirely. Drew Wilson offers his thoughts on the subject of malware as an anti-piracy measure as mentioned in this report. BoingBoing covered this story and pointed to 2 paragraphs in the 84 page PDF file. These paragraphs are found on page 81 in the PDF file. They are: Additionally, software can be written that will allow only authorized users to open files containing valuable information. If an unauthorized person accesses the information, a range of actions might then occur.

Twitter partners with BBC, Fox, Fuse and the Weather Channel in order to offer real-time videos in the Twitter Amplify stream. In terms of real-time chatter on the internet, Twitter is the place to go. Today, the giant social media company made a push in its bid to bring in more advertising by releasing Twitter Amplify. The new service focuses on bringing real-time video to site. The initial partners are BBC America, Fox, Fuse and the Weather Channel. Twitter Amplify is hoping to improve the TV experience, not replace it. The in-stream videos will round up timely content to remind users to tune in. Interestingly enough, it appears that Twitter will limit use of Twitter Amplify to paying users.

After a week of rumors, Yahoo! officially announces its buyout of Tumblr for $1.1 billion with vows to keep the service independent. It’s official. Yahoo is buying out the up and coming blogging platform Tumblr for $1.1 billion, mostly in cash. This acquisition, of course, was met with numerous negative comments from Tumblr users during the week leading up to the deal. In fact WordPress, Tumblr’s main competitor, has actually noted that they have had 72,000 post imports on Sunday. To put this into perspective, WordPress generally only sees 400-500 daily post imports. Despite all of the negative comments from users that Yahoo will change Tumblr, both companies have noted that Tumblr itself will remain independent.

In order to be competitive in the video streaming service, companies need to stand out from streaming giants like Netflix. In order to carve out a niche, many video distributors are now offering live streaming online and mobile video. Unfortunately, many companies have not been able to properly integrate the live streaming system into the on-demand video streams. Enter Brightcove. Unlike other companies, Brightcove’s new module, named the Brightcove Video Cloud Live, offers and easy way for customers to push out live video streams to a wide variety of devices.

Google web users now have access to 15GB of storage shared between Drive, Gmail and Google+ Photos. Until recently, Google users needed to keep track of free storage on all Google products separately. Today, Google has unified storage on their numerous platforms to make it easier for users to see how much storage they have left. Web users will have 15GB of free storage shared between Drive, Gmail and Google+ Photos while app customers will have 30GB. Not only will it make it easier to keep track of storage, it also allows more flexibility in use for these products. Since the storage is shared across the board for Drive, Gmail and Google+ Photos, users can decide how they want to partition of the storage space.
